Quite simply put, Multimedia is a technique where elements like sound (music, voice narration & sound effects), animation (2D & 3D), computer-generated graphics, photographs, video and text are combined for expressing ideas in communication, entertainment or art.
Multimedia is usually recorded and played, displayed, or accessed by information processing devices, such as CD-ROMS, i-ROMS or other computerized electronic devices, but can also be part of a live performance.
Multimedia is broadly divided into linear and non-linear applications. |

inear applications progress without any navigation control for the viewer such as a cinema presentation or a Video presentation.
The presentation starts from the beginning and flows to the end. Best case scenario would be a Powerpoint presentation. |

This medium offers user interactivity to control progress as used with computer games or in self-paced computer-based training. Non-linear applications are also known as hypermedia.
Whilst linear applications are only recorded, non linear applications can be live or recorded. A recorded non-linear application may allow interactivity via a navigation system and a live one may allow interactivity via interaction with the presenter or performer.
The recent global revolution in communication, information presentation and packaging has at its helm the genre of interactive multimedia. In many ways this medium is compared with web sites, especially in that they both feature buttons (hot spots) to click on, looping animations, impressive graphics and text. With multimedia, however, there is much more to be experienced and taken advantage of: video clips and full-scale animations, crisp voice narration, music scores, revolutionary Interactivity, and high definition graphics. All these are possible because the application is accessed locally, i.e. it is resident on the computer via a CD-ROM drive, and does not depend on phone lines and narrow band-width facilities which limit the power of web sites. |

Its actually simpler than it appears. It’s usefulness to your organisation depends entirely on how you wish to utilize it.
In other words, its uses are rather limitless. Here are a few areas in which organisations and individuals all over the world have been using multimedia CD-ROM applications:
